Alan Ashton's Organised Keyboards Review (from ORGAN1st Magazine Issue 30):The next two new releases are connected inasmuch as they both come from the same small independent company and also there is an inter connection between the artists too. Firstly we have YOU, ME & CVP (RB2005) which features Richard Bower playing the Clavinova CVP 307. This is reputably the finest digital piano that Yamaha has ever madeÉ until the next one that is! It has Grand and universal piano sounds, organ flutes, blues harmonica, soprano sax, intros & endings, natural, sweet, cool, live and regular voices, and even lights that illuminate above the correct keys to playÉ ideal for someone like me, but not a good idea in an organ concert environment with a whopping great mirror behind you! Kind of gives the game away. There are far too many facilities for me to even begin to grasp so I suggest when next you happen to be in Richards company, get him to give you a personal demonstration.
For his programme he kicks off with the lovely Irving Berlin number LETŐS FACE THE MUSIC AND DANCE and follows on with perhaps a much lesser known number A CHILD IS BORN. Not to be confused with the similarly titled Harry Belefonte hit, this one is by Thad Jones a harmonically advanced trumpeter/cornetist with a distinctive sound and who was also a talented arranger/composer. Recognised for being his best-known composition, Richard plays it throughout just using piano sounds. Composer Mike Batt is responsible for ÔdiscoveringŐ singer Katie Melua, and for giving her the 2004 hit THE CLOSEST THING TO CRAZY. I particularly enjoyed the pairing of the lovely Richard Rodgers number MY ROMANCE which is featured in a classic Hollywood musical Jumbo, starring Doris Day, Martha Raye & Jimmy Durante, with MY ONE & ONLY LOVE. For film music fans there is also a choice of the hauntingly beautiful theme from ON GOLDEN POND or LARAŐS THEME (Somewhere My Love) from Dr Zhivago. IsnŐt IT A PITY was written back in 1933 and came from GershwinŐs Broadway musical Pardon my English, and which was admirably suited to the vocal styles of Cleo Laine and Mel Torme. Apart from IF I ONLY HAD TIME / DONŐT KNOW WHY this leaves the Leslie Bricusse/Frank Wildhorn composition THIS IS THE MOMENT which comes from the show Jekyll & Hyde. For this penultimate inclusion Richard brings into play a whole gamut of orchestral sounds to compliment a very dramatic arrangement. The capabilities of the CVP307 are indeed very impressive. For the finale Richard is joined by both Sarah & Adele Foley who play Flute and Alto Saxophone respectively in their own three part arrangement of the Billy Joel number AND SO IT GOES, from his Storm Front album. So what is the connection between these two recordings that I referred to at the head of this review? Richard Bower has, for some time now, been the tutor for Sarah, Adele & Lydia Foley, and it is on the Harmony Cottage / Foley Tribe label that Sarah has released UNCHAINED MELODY (Continued on that CD page)
